Two face-to-face serpents entwine themselves decoratively around each other and around a staff that is topped with a sparkling round blue Swarovski crystal. A pair of outstretched wings frame the crystal and give this cut-out pendant its distinctive T-shape. The two tiers of feathers and other select details are enhanced with an antique effect which contrasts dramatically with the crystal's clarity.

The origin of the caduceus symbol goes all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia and a Sumerian god named Ningishzida. But it is Hermes of Greek mythology, as well as Mercury, the messenger god of Roman mythology, that the caduceus is most often associated with. Later, the meaning of the caduceus was expanded even more, becoming the basis of both the astrological symbol for the planet Mercury and also the element mercury.

Note: The caduceus is often confused with – and incorrectly used in place of – the Rod of Asciepius, which is the true symbol of the the medical profession. The Rod of Asciepius, which is used in the logo for the World Health Organization, has only one snake and no wings.
