Like most ancient Egyptian art, Anubis is depicted here with head in profile, but eye and shoulders shown frontally. His image is set within a frame resembling the oval cartouches of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Anubis' profile is in relief, raised against its background, with details effectively accented with oxidation.
Anubis, who is most often shown in the form of a man with the head of a dog or jackal, guided souls of the recently departed to the underworld. He was part of the 'Weighing of the Heart', a procedure that determined whether or not the soul was worthy enough to enter the afterlife, and he was the protector of graves.
