These tiny post earrings - roughly 1/4 inch x 3/8 inch in size – are a simple and straightforward rendition of the traditional Star of David symbol, made of polished sterling silver.
Nowadays, the Star of David (Magen David is the Hebrew name) is almost synonymous with Judaism, but in ancient times it was really just a simple geometric figure made up of two triangles, one pointing up, one down, with no associations with any religion, country, etc. Originally it was merely a decoration – sometimes used in Christian churches – and sometimes a symbol of magic. It wasn't until the 1800's in the Jewish community of Prague, that the six-pointed star came into use as the Jewish symbol.
Today, many people wear the Star of David as protection against evil, in much the same way that King David wore the star on his shield in the ancient United Kingdom of Israel.
