In a traditional pose, Isis kneels at the center of this intricately detailed pendant, her arms - with wings- outstretched across its entire width. Fashioned after ancient Egyptian wall carvings and paintings, she is surrounded by panels of many different hieroglyphs, in this case cut-out of the pendant and giving it a rich texture.
Isis herself is also beautifully detailed - especially her multi-tiered wings which are dramatized with an antique effect that makes each individual feather stand out.
Isis was an important goddess of ancient Egypt for thousands of years. She is often depicted with wings in based on the myth that she transformed herself into a bird so that she could more easily find the widely-scattered remains of her murdered husband Osiris. Isis collected and rejoined them, bringing Osiris back to life and so making her an important deity of resurrection as well as death and the afterlife.
