In Scottish history, during a war between the Scottish and the Vikings of Denmark, the Vikings attempted make a surprise attack on the Scots, but one of them stepped on a thistle with a bare foot, causing him to cry out in pain and alerting the Scots to their presence.
Since this episode, the plant became known as the "Guardian Thistle" and can now be found on Scottish coins, banknotes, stamps, and broadswords.
