This pendant pays tribute to the owl with its elaborately decorative treatment: The owl's breast is decorated with a geometric pattern of Celtic knots, and to either side the wings have a bold staggered pattern of feathers. The eyes, like most owls' eyes, are striking, not just for their arrangement of radiating lines and concentric circles, but also because they're topped by a V-shaped pair of outlandish eyebrows. Nestled in the crook of the V is a small triquetra, or trinity, knot. Most of the detailing is done in relief, with raised polished surfaces set off against recessed and darkened backgrounds for dramatic effect.
In the realm of spirit animals, the nocturnal owl symbolizes wisdom and magic and is associated with the night. According to Greek myth, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, always sat with an owl on her blind side, so that she could see the whole truth. Many other cultures, from the Vikings to native Americans, have also celebrated the mysterious bird of the night, believing in its wisdom and magic.
