Not being ornithologists, we could be wrong about this being a horned owl, but it does appear to have the telltale 'horns'. And like other owls it has the 'disc' around its eyes, which is actually like a satellite dish that catches sound waves and directs them to the ears.
It also has an Egyptian-looking semicircular 'bib' below its face that visually echoes its eyes, and the rest of its body is like an orderly tapestry of decorative feather patterns.
This watchful owl is realistically rendered and posed with its natural prop, a branch, with all its fine details enhanced by a darkened oxidized effect.
According to Greek myth, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, always sat with an owl on her blind side, so that she could see the whole truth. Many other cultures, from the Vikings to native Americans, have also celebrated the mysterious bird of the night, believing in its wisdom and magic.
