In the merging of these two designs – the ouroboros and a triquetra – the meaning of each is strengthened by the other. With no beginning and no end, the Celtic knot by nature symbolizes eternity. And the ouroboros is one of the oldest symbols of nature's endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
Design-wise, the way they are merged also makes sense. Like the interwoven nature of the Celtic knot, with its overlapping ins and outs, the snake also weaves its way through the curving lines of the triquetra in much the same way.
And yet each of the two designs keeps its own separate identity, emphasized by the contrast between the texture of the snake's scaly skin – highlighted by a darkened antique effect – and the polished smoothness of the triquetra's surfaces.
