A St. Brigid's cross, simply detailed with inscribed lines indicating straw or rushes, is framed in a round wreath-like border with a running Celtic knot pattern. The cross is cut-out, as well as the individual knots, and all the details are darkened with oxidation to contrast with the polished silver.
St. Brigid's cross, originally made from woven rushes, was hung by the door or in the rafters of homes to ward off fire, evil, hunger, and disease. It is thought to have its roots in the pagan sunwheel, which was meant to bless the earth with fertility and life. Today, the making of St. Brigid's cross is one of the traditional rituals in Ireland to celebrate the beginning of early spring.
