A slender chunk of pink elbaite tourmaline is set in a 'tablet' of metal clay that is inscribed with runes and topped with a crescent moon that is slightly bowl-shaped. The tourmaline is set into a slot in the tablet and held in place with fine silver wire that has been soldered to the tablet.
This truly unique piece is a fusion of traditional jewelry techniques, including wax carving, metal clay sculpting, and wire-wrapping. The bail has been discreetly placed on the back of the pendant and is integral with it. The silver has been oxidized, giving the pendant its aged look and accentuating the inscribed runes.
The raw tourmaline itself is slightly asymmetrical at the top and is mostly pink, but blends into a peach color on the right side. It comes from the Paprok Mine in Afghanistran.
Tourmaline is a crystalline mineral that occurs in a wide variety of colors. This particular piece is pinkish and a little yellowish in color, translucent, and has a crystal pattern that is parallel and elongated. Metaphysically, tourmaline is believed to have many healing properties, with an especially beneficial effect on the heart and root chakras, which can promote love, compassion and grounding.
