A hexagram is rendered in three dimensions, transforming it into a tiny sculpture that looks different when you see it from different angles. Seen from the front, the shape of the hexagram is perfectly clear. But look at it on edge and it looks more like a bird's nest, thanks in part to the pendant's thickness and the big curving lines the two stars make in their intertwining pattern. From another angle it doesn't look like a hexagram at all but a random free-form doodle.

Also, this pendant has no bail, which would have detracted from its sculptural character. Instead, a chain just loops through any one of the hexagram's six points, which is always at the top.

This pendant has a rustic almost handmade character, which is enhanced by an oxidized treatment that selectively adds a dark tarnished finish to the sterling silver at chosen points. The oxidation gives the pendant the look of being aged.

In occult circles, the hexagram's meaning is closely tied to how it is composed of two triangles, one pointing upwards and one pointing downwards. It is a symbol of the union of opposites, such as male and female, physical and spiritual, and the principle of "as above, so below".

It is also known as the Star of David and is closely associated with Judaism. Originally it was merely a decoration – sometimes used in Christian churches – and sometimes a symbol of magic. It wasn't until the 1800's in the Jewish community of Prague, that the six-pointed star came into use as the Jewish symbol.

We wanted to give our customers a way of personalizing their pendants, but many of the pieces in our store are textured on the backside, have an uneven surface, or a design on all sides, making it impossible to engrave them.

Our solution to this problem was to offer engravable charms that you can add onto any necklace. They are small, about 1/2" wide (12 mm) and come with free engraving on the front side (backside engraving is available for an additional charge).

We currently only have these in two shapes (a heart or circle), but will be adding more as time goes on. The charms are also engraved in-house and custom fit with findings to match your pendant.

You can choose engravable charm options right on the product page of any pendant. Below are a few photographs of charms we've made for customers in the past, along with their pendants. I've also included a photo of a cute necklace we made for a customer with many of our themed charms.
