One of the most important deities of ancient Egypt, Isis is often depicted as either a scorpion, a cow or, as in this necklace, a bird. Isis' husband Osiris was hacked to pieces by a jealous god, who then scattered the pieces all over Egypt. But Isis transformed herself into a bird and so was able to find the pieces, re-unite them, and resurrect her husband. In this way Isis came to be worshiped as the goddess who helped the dead enter the afterlife. Her magical powers were greater than those of all the other gods.
Isis is depicted here on bended knee with her arms and wings dramatically extended straight outward. Her wings, the centerpiece of this pendant, display an elaborate 3-tiered pattern of feathers and look to be inspired by artwork of eagles and falcons that has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs.
An antique effect highlights the feathers as well as hair and facial features. The opposite side of the pendant has a decorative hammered finish.
