Since the Middle Ages, the Celtic cross has been a much-loved symbol of Irish culture and heritage. Traditionally it has been used to mark graves but over the years has become a popular design motif for so much more, from tattoos to jewelry. And like most design motifs, it continues to evolve.
This necklace is one example: The traditional Celtic cross elements are all here, including the circle or nimbus at its intersection. But the upper three 'arms' have been elaborated upon to become three 'triquetras'. A triquetra is a three-cornered endless knot sometimes known as a trinity knot. It has a leafy look so the modification has added a welcome touch of nature that is both friendly-looking and decorative.
There is a slightly rustic character to this pendant which is enhanced by a subtle use of antique blacking.
