Anubis is the ancient Egyptian god of death; he is lord of cemeteries, tombs and the underworld, with many powers and responsibilities: He embalmed and mummified the newly deceased and protected their grave after burial. He was also part of the ceremony in which the deceased's heart was weighed against a feather to determine if that person would be allowed to enter the afterlife, after which he would ushered those worthy souls into the underworld himself.
Anubis is usually depicted as a well-proportioned man with a canine head having pointy ears. The head is usually black, symbolically representing not only the color of the deceased's body after embalming, but also that of the fertile Nile valley, which itself was a symbol of regeneration and life. The reason for Anubis' canine head may have been in response to the ancient Egyptians' need for a god to protect their graves against the dogs and jackals who would often dig them up.
This is an elaborate 2-piece necklace with Anubis' classically Egyptian side profile suspended from a circular wing-shaped frame that is beautifully detailed with a scarab framed by two snakes and radiating feathers. The hanger is inscribed with a small ankh symbol as well.
