This is the symbol of the Freemasons, probably the largest secret society in the world.
The Freemasons have their roots in the Medieval guilds of cathedral builders and stonemasons, and the square and compass in this symbol represent the tools of their trade.
But they also have another deeper meaning: The square is supposed to symbolize the visible manifestation of a human being – the body – while the compass stands for the invisible - the soul.
The letter G at the center is for 'Geometry', which is the guiding principle of their trade. But many believe it to also stand for the 'Great Architect of the Universe', referring to the Freemasons' prerequisite that all members believe in the existence of a Supreme Being.
This necklace is a nicely detailed cut-out rendering of the symbol, with much ornamentation, a fancy circular border, and a good use of antique effect to bring out details and also give it depth and a traditional feel.
