Seeing the sun rise and set every day, and the Nile flooding their land every year, the ancient Egyptians developed the ouroboros symbol to help express their belief that time was cyclical. By extension, they also believed that their own existence was a repetitive cycle of dying and re-creation. The ouroboros a symbol that has come to represent infinity and self-sufficiency as well.
This necklace is a variation of the traditional ouroboros and features two snakes intertwined in a Celtic knot-inspired configuration. There are two details that make it especially interesting: Only one of the snakes is decorated with the diamond-shaped scale pattern, while the other is smooth and polished.
The contrast in textures is striking, one playing off the other and giving the pendant a slightly asymmetrical look. The other notable feature is that the snakes are so intertwined that it's not clear who's eating whose tail. Like a glass half full or half empty, it could make a difference in how you interpret the symbol.
