With such a distinctive look, this gold-plated pendant could only be the well-known King Tut's mask: It has the long false pharaoh's beard, boyish face, and the serpent symbol on the forehead. And the stiff striped headdress that surrounds the face gives the pendant an overall geometric look, making a great contrasting backdrop for the very human facial features.
Made of lead-free pewter, the pendant is plated in gold that recalls the original. Some silver accenting is also used. The pendant is very sculptured, the face protrudes prominently from out of the headdress, and eyes, mouth and nose are all realistically done and very three-dimensional.
Tutankhamun, 'the boy king', ruled and was buried more than 3000 years ago, but his tomb – including this mask – was not discovered until 1922. He was only nine years old when his reign began, and only nineteen when he died, probably from malaria. The mask is believed to be in the likeness of Osiris, the Egyptian god of the afterlife. It has become one of the world's most well-known works of art.
