This is a symbol for the Roman god Mercury and the Greek god Hermes* before him.
Mercury's simple form holds many meanings:
Merging the symbols for both Earth and Venus, its dominant shape is the circle. According to mythology, the circle signifies the infinite, eternity, timelessness and the Divine Spirit which permeates all things.
The cross shape signifies a Caduceus, which is the wand that Hermes is associated with. Sometimes shown with two intertwined snakes, the Caduceus hearkens back to Roman mythology: The god Mercury came across two snakes embroiled in combat and separated them with his wand, bringing peace. In this way, Mercury and his Caduceus came to be known as symbols of peace and restoration.
The cross shape also stands for physical, earthly Matter. And here it is combined with a crescent Moon, which signifies Mind. Together they represent the manifestation of our thoughts in the material world.
Although many more meanings abound, Mercury in essence has evolved into a positive symbol embodying communication, open-mindedness, peace, and rational thought.
*Hermes was the Messenger of the gods, serving as a link between the Divine (heaven) and Humankind (earth). He also guided the souls of the dead to the underworld of Hell and the afterlife in Heaven.
