Ancient Egyptians believed in Afterlife and Rebirth, which helps explain what sarcophagi (the plural of sarcophagus) were all about.

An Egyptian sarcophagus, like the one depicted in this pendant, was a funeral receptacle for a corpse, usually made of stone and serving a practical purpose: It helped preserve the mummified corpse inside from deterioration and mutilation, until the deceased entered the Afterlife. And just as important, its heavy lid was also protection against theft by grave robbers, since the deceased – especially the wealthy - were buried with many of their earthly possessions such as jewelry, textiles, perfumes and oils.

Being just a temporary home for the deceased awaiting the Afterlife, most sarcophagi were left above ground rather than buried. In fact, many sarcophagi were decorated with small ornamental doors and windows: so that the deceased could leave when the time came.

Since sarcophagi were intended to remain above ground, usually as part of an elaborate tomb or crypt, they were usually ornately carved and decorated. The wealthier and more important the deceased, the more elaborate the decorations and the more expensive the materials, such as gold and silver. For the mightiest people or royalty, they were monuments to those individuals. For the poorer people, the humbler materials might have been river reeds or pottery.

The face crafted on the lid was most often the face of the deceased.

This locket is a miniature version of a sarcophagus that resembles King Tut's death mask with its striped “nemes" headdress and the long, narrow false beard that were the paraphernalia of pharaohs. It also has the same broad striped scalloped collar. These are all accented with a golden finish, and most of the other detailing is also enhanced with a darkened oxidized effect.

A small Eye of Horus symbol is inscribed on the reverse side. A tiny paper scroll with hieroglyphics is included, or put a similar sized treasure of your own inside.

We wanted to give our customers a way of personalizing their pendants, but many of the pieces in our store are textured on the backside, have an uneven surface, or a design on all sides, making it impossible to engrave them.

Our solution to this problem was to offer engravable charms that you can add onto any necklace. They are small, about 1/2" wide (12 mm) and come with free engraving on the front side (backside engraving is available for an additional charge).

We currently only have these in two shapes (a heart or circle), but will be adding more as time goes on. The charms are also engraved in-house and custom fit with findings to match your pendant.

You can choose engravable charm options right on the product page of any pendant. Below are a few photographs of charms we've made for customers in the past, along with their pendants. I've also included a photo of a cute necklace we made for a customer with many of our themed charms.
