Poison rings and lockets were developed in Europe during the 1700s as a way to either surreptitiously do in your enemy or commit suicide to prevent yourself from falling into the hands of your enemy.

This capsule-shaped locket is not only handsome but has several features that make it special:

The bottom holds a small rainbow moonstone gemstone, which is called a 'cabochon'. A cabochon is a stone that is shaped and polished, usually round, according to a technique that was common before faceting – or cutting – was developed. So this is a throwback to the time of the poison lockets' origin.

Another feature is the cover, which is slotted to fit a small key mounted on the brim of the locket. This keeps the locket securely closed, so that whatever treasure you put inside – dried herbs, a scroll, ashes, a photo – will be safe. But be careful to always twist the cover before opening the locket; otherwise you risk damaging it.

You can also see from the photos how decorative this locket is: Almost every surface holds some embellishment, including the top of the cover and the bottom surrounding the moonstone. Small filigree scrolls and granulation (decoration with tiny spheres) give it an exquisitely detailed look. Featured are two pentacles, one on either side. All the detailing is raised against a recessed background that has been darkened with an oxidizing technique.

The inner compartment extends to the bottom of the locket.
