Historians have debated whether or not the original Celtic knots had any meaning at all or if maybe they were just meant to be pretty pictures. Like many things so old, the answer seems to be lost in history.
Over the years, though, they have definitely come to hold great spiritual meaning, both personal and universal. Maybe that's because of their associations and resemblances to other potent symbols. For example, a very basic Celtic knot has similarities to the 'lemniscate', the horizontal figure eight-shaped symbol without a beginning or end that represents 'infinity'.
Even so, it's the artful elaboration of such a simple idea, such as in this necklace, that makes it beautiful – the interlacing of an endless ribbon into an intricate geometric arrangement that also looks and feels natural and human. It's that over-and-under twisting-and-turning that also makes it fun to trace with your eye.
This pendant is softly dome-shaped which, combined with its petal-like arrangement of knots, suggests a floral blossom.
