Traditionally the pentagram, or five-point star, is said to have powers that are derived from its various associations with the number 5 as a sacred, natural number. The number 5 can be found throughout nature - think of five fingers, the star inside an apple cut crosswise or the five arms of a starfish.
And a circle enclosing it – thereby creating a 'pentacle' – serves to protect the powers within.
In this unique double pentacle necklace, the powers are multiplied by two, plus the triple circles that surround them seem to speak strongly of enclosure and extra protection.
The two pentacles stacked one above the other within the larger medallion are book-ended by two crescent moon-shaped borders, one mirroring the other, which are decorated with a flower and vine motif springing from old-fashioned keyhole shapes.
The single-line elements are all cut out of the domed medallion to create an open and lacy three-dimensional pendant. A subtle antique effect highlights the linework and adds a slight aged look.
