In much the same way as a circle drawn around a pentagram protects the powers of the pentagram, this tree of life seems to be strengthened by its highly decorative circular border.
Although the border is wider and much larger, it actually has the effect of visually enhancing the tree, giving it resonance, as ripples of water radiating from a dropped stone in a pond emphasize the center of the circle.
The strict geometry of the circular border and the dense weaving of the Celtic knots and runes contrast with the tree's free and naturalistic form to help to set it off.
There's a subtle antiquing effect that gives the pendant depth and an appropriately 'ancient' look. A satisfyingly rounded dome shape gives it a more three-dimensional look and feel that complements the elaborateness of the design.
