The longship was probably the biggest reason why the Vikings were able to become such skilled navigators. After all, Lief Erikson and his crew made it to North America almost 500 years before Columbus did.

Viking longships were built with very shallow hulls, which enabled them to sail in shallow waters without bottoming out. And the ships were very light – light enough to be carried overland by the crew.

They were also symmetrical in design; the front (bow) was designed to be as hydrodynamic as the back )stern). This not only made it more navigable in ice-bound seas, it also enabled the Vikings to reverse direction quickly, an advantageous maneuver in sea battles.

The bows of longships were often decorated with carved snakes or dragons, as in this pendant. These were good luck symbols to accompany the Vikings during their long voyages, but even more important they were intended to instill fear into the people they were invading.

This pewter pendant is also decorated with the crew's shields, which were lined up along the the top rim of the hull to protect the rowers until they landed.
