One of the most important deities of ancient Egypt, Isis is often depicted as either a scorpion, a cow or, as in this necklace, a bird. The reason:
Isis' husband Osiris was hacked to pieces by a jealous god, who then scattered the pieces all over Egypt. But Isis transformed herself into a bird and so was able to find the pieces, re-unite them, and resurrect her dead husband. In this way Isis came to be worshiped as the goddess who helped the dead enter the afterlife. And her magical powers were greater than those of all the other gods.
Isis is depicted here in the classic Egyptian side profile view with her arms/wings extended upward to form a feathery circle. On her head she carries a decorative tablet of raised characters set against a blackened background. The feathers of Isis' wings are nicely detailed as well and enhanced by an antiqued finish. The back of the cut-out pendant has a decorative hammered finish.
