This round pendant is both dramatic and simple in its design: An ancient spiral symbol polished smooth and shiny and raised against a recessed background that has been oxidized to a dark tone and given a fine textured finish. With their matching finish, the sides and opposite side are an extension of the spiral.
It's hard to believe that something so geometrically perfect as a spiral could exist in nature, but it does, for example in the nautilus and other shells. And astronomers have know since at least 1936 that many galaxies, including our own Milky Way, are spiral-shaped.
Ancient artifacts show that there's something about the spiral that is innate in humans. A decorative object found in Ukraine that dates back to 10,000 bc contains a spiral-like form. And the Newgrange prehistoric monument in Ireland, which was built somewhere around 3200 bc contains rock with spirals carved into it.
Today the spiral is often interpreted as a double-edged symbol, both of an individual's journey from a world of materialism and misconceptions to a realization of inner truth and conversely from the egoistic inner-self outward to a universal consciousness.
