Oddly enough, this particular style of chain - known as a Belcher chain - is named after a bare-knuckles boxer named Jem Belcher, who was Champion of All England from 1800 to 1805.
A Belcher chain is characterized by its links which are wider than they are thick, sort of like short cylinders.
