Each of these post earrings is a small four-cornered Celtic knot with its points oriented in the four directions - north, south, east and west. Between each pair of points is an even smaller scroll or 'S' shape diagonally connecting the two and giving the earrings not just a more decorative look but also a sense of movement.
Based on a traditional Celtic quaternary - or four-cornered knot - the Witch's Knot has been used by practitioners of Wicca and other such beliefs to protect, bind and release energy. When knots are tied as part of a spell, for example, it has the effect of binding the energy of one's intention to reality. The knots are also often worn to ward off bad luck and negative energy.
