Even though wolves are now extinct in Ireland, ancient Celtic tribes had a close affinity for them. One of their legends had it that the wolf chased the sun each day, catching it and devouring it at dusk, so that the moon could safely rise.
Indeed, the Celtic moon goddess Cerridwen's companion was a wolf. And the Celts also believed that wolves could take human form – werewolves – when the moon rose.
In that spirit, this necklace shows a wolf baying at a crescent moon. The entire composition is done in an elaborate intermingling of Celtic knots, the moon's knots being cut-out for a more transparent effect and the wolf's knots being emphasized with a darkened antique effect to give it more solidity.
The pendant also features a pentacle embedded very naturally within the moon's knots, and a subtle three-dimensional treatment of the wolf to give the necklace relief.
